Who'd a thunk it? On Saturday you've got Lee Corso donning an Auburn helmet and waving around a Tennessee Vol jersey (jerk) and saying that Vanderbilt has a nice little team that's going to the Liberty Bowl.
A day later, Vanderbilt is 5-0 and at least one expert is picking Vanderbilt to go to the Outback Bowl on Jan. 1. Mark Schlabach of ESPN has the Commodores pegged to play Illinois. His buddy Bruce Feldman has the Dores headed for slightly less rarified air: the Liberty Bowl to face Marshall.
Anyway, it's all speculation and we're a long, long way from any kind of real selection process, as evidenced by the kind of adjustments made this week to the projections.
For example:
• Vanderbilt beat Auburn, is now No. 13 or 14 in the nation, and is being groomed for either the Outback Bowl...or the Liberty Bowl. Two very different animals.
• LSU, headed for the Capital One or the Orange Bowl last week, had an off week and now Schlabach thinks the Bengal Tigers are headed to the national championship game.
• Bama, therefore, is not headed to the championship game, according to Schlabach, but to the Sugar Bowl, while Feldman is sticking with the championship game for the Tide.
• Georgia is favored by both writers to go to the Cotton Bowl, though Schlabach liked the Dawgs for Sugar last week.
• Florida blew out Arkansas and got a mythical Capital One/Sugar Bowl prediction for the third straight week.
• Auburn is still an Outback Bowl team in Feldman's eyes, but Schlabach has dropped the Tigers from Outback to Chick-Fil-A.
• Ole Miss has been getting solid projections since the start of the season, even though the Rebels are 2-3. In fact, Feldman upgraded them from Liberty to Chick-Fil-A after their loss to South Carolina, while Schlabach downgraded them from Music City to Independence.
• South Carolina's victory got them an upgrade by Schlabach from PapaJohns.com to Liberty, while Feldman is keeping them in Music City.
• Tennessee's performance against Northern Illinois instilled no confidence in the experts. Both downgraded the Vols from the Chick-Fil-A to PapaJohns.com and Independence.
• Kentucky's gritty fight against the Tide motivated Schlabach to upgrade the Wildcats from Independence to Music City, while Feldman held firm with PapaJohns.com.
• For the third straight week, Miss State is going nowhere. For the second straight week, Arkansas is going nowhere.
We'll see how it all comes out.
