DID VANDERBILT WIN OR DID AUBURN LOSE? VANDERBILT WON!

So Stan White, the former Auburn quarterback and a member of the broadcast team, just said in the postgame show that Vanderbilt didn't win tonight. No, Vanderbilt doesn't beat Auburn, he said. Ever. Auburn just fails to execute and tonight they failed to execute and didn't score as many points as Vanderbilt does.

Whatever. If you look next at Vanderbilt's record, you'll see a "W" next to the Auburn game, not an "FTE" (failed to execute).

This was not an accident. For the third game in a row, Vanderbilt did not give up a single point in the second half. Sure, Auburn's offense was still discombobulated. For that, Vanderbilt fans are grateful.

But Auburn came into this game leading the nation in third down defense with a remarkable 14.5 percent conversion rate.

Vanderbilt's offense came into the game converting 37.5 percent of their third downs into first downs. Something had to give, right?

It did. Against Auburn, Vanderbilt faced third down 17 times and got first downs 6 times, a 35.3 percent success rate, consistent with its usual performance and far better than Auburn's opponents usually fare.
