VANDERBILT TAKES AUBURN'S PLACE IN USA TODAY POLL

Last week, Auburn was No. 14 in the USA Today poll and Vanderbilt was No. 19. Today, Vanderbilt jumps to No. 14 and Auburn falls to No. 23.

It wasn't a matter of pollsters blindly moving the Commodores into the slot vacated by the Tigers. Pollsters, be they coaches or sports writers, are going to move the ’Dores up very carefully. And so they should. And as soon as they lose, they'll be dropping Vanderbilt like, well, like something cheap that you drop.

Anyway, Vanderbilt moved up five spots on the strength of its victory over Auburn, but also thanks to:

• Losses by No. 10 (now No. 20) South Florida and No. 17 (now No. 24) Wisconsin.

• A lackluster performance by No. 16 (now No. 15) Kansas against Iowa State.

• A victory by No. 18 (now No. 16) Boise State over a lackluster Louisiana Tech squad, which by the way opened its season with a stunning home victory over Mississippi State, which plays Vanderbilt in Starkville on Saturday.

New to the this week's Top 25: Michigan State, Northwestern and Cal.
