I think that McHaney, Hal, and Thomas have all been serviceable, but havent done anything to say their stock is up. Townsend has just seen some time in mop-up duty, I'd give him an incomplete. Mylon Brown, along with seemingly anyone we put at guard, should be in the Down category. He's come a long way since last season, but at no point this season have we seen the ability to keep Larry upright.

Dimon, I agree...Vandy's special team performers aren't 'players'.

Actually, I think our kickers are playing as expected. On the other hand, our returners (some of those mentioned on the Up/Down list) are falling short of expectations thus far this season IMO.

I'm hoping that Matthews, Norman, Barden and Cole to make some noise for the offensive over the middle 3rd of the schedule. If so, we'll be competitive and open up a few more eyes as long as the D continues to play at a high level.

Maybe I should explain what I meant by "up." I don't mean these guys are all-SEC. I mean they weren't even in the discussion for playing time (Hal being an exception). Mylon Brown has made huge strides since last year. Nobody was talking about McHaney playing, and he has. Townsend was our fifth best freshman lineman but he's playing ahead of Bernstein, Lewis and Valedon.

I don't see what Townsend has done to be up either. I would rank Chase White in front of him.

Fugger honorable mention??

Agree with Norman being down. I hope that CJF has been honest about Norman's health. Hard to believe that Norman has not played 1 snap, yet (after 4 games) is not "injured" more seriously than being reported. Barden is a mystery as to why he seems to be ignored in the offense especially with CJF being a coach who has built offenses in the past. It's been reported that Barden is an NFL prospect but we can't seem to include him in the game-plan in any meaningful way. Mathews (along with Krause and Boyd) are solid wr's, not superstars. Mathews has been overhyped but he will be fine after we get our O-line issues resolved and he has some balls thrown his way. I think Boyd, Tate, Krause, and Mathews are a very solid SEC wr core.

Yes, Fugger's an honorable mention. Oh, and remind me never to do this again. This isn't about players being ranked above other players. Sure, right now Chase White plays more than Joe Townsend. Let's say this summer that White was worth 75 cents a share, recruits James Lewis and Jake Bernstein were also worth 75 cents a share, and Joe Townsend, the last recruit to be offered a scholarship, was worth 40 cents. Now White, who's a starter albeit a shaky one, is worth 90 cents a share; Bernstein and Lewis, who are apparently redshirting which isn't unusual, have done nothing to hurt themselves and still are worth 75 cents a share. Meanwhile, Joe Townsend is second team and has burned his redshirt, so he's worth more than Bernstein and Lewis for the time being, say about 80 cents. So White has increased his stock 15 cents and Townsend has increased his stock by 40 cents. So Townsend's stock has increased more than White's. Mylon Brown, who was a lazy slob at the end of Vandy's bench, is now a starter. Sure, he's struggling but his stock is way up over last year. Chris Marve is a badass just like he was last year, but his stock isn't considerably higher. He's still waaaay better than Mylon Brown.

OK, I'm moving on to something else.

for the record, I imagine the majority of the readers knew what you were getting at. said otherwise, its simply who has exceeded, matched, or missed expectations.

Just remember everyone has an opinion, it doesn't mean it's right or wrong.

we happily welcome all opinions. keep em coming.

I don't have any opinion about the lists, other than to remark that it's a bad sign that none of the wide receivers (well, one) have improved their stock so far this season.

Overall, its a great list. This type is always difficult cause depending on the time frame used, any player can be considered up or down.

Whoever said they were hoping to see more from Cole is in for a disappointment. Even if he does recover from his surgery in time to regain football shape this season, theres still a lot of variables in play that could lead him taking a medical redshirt.

As for Norman, hes physically healthy at this point, but that doesnt mean hes 100% back to football form. He had a serious operation that throws off all your coordination, and he hasn't looked good enough yet as far as the burst needed to be an effective RB
