David Williams tells AP he'll make an announcement about Vandy coach "within the next day or so"

Since the time Matt Bonesteel said that Eric Prisbell said that an unnamed source told him that Gus Malzahn is headed to Vandy, the always reliable Teresa Walker with the Associated Press filed this story:

"NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Vanderbilt vice chancellor David Williams says the Commodores expect to announce their new football coach within the next day or so.

"Williams declined to comment when asked Sunday if Vanderbilt has offered the job to anyone. The Commodores have been searching for a new coach since Robbie Caldwell resigned Nov. 27, and they wanted to announce the new coach before students leave for their winter break later this week."

Wow, so Williams is timing his announcement for the students? Then maybe he'll stoop scheduling the Tennessee game when the students are away on Thanksgiving break.

Wow!..did you not realize Vanderbilt abandoned the Thanksgviving UT game years ago? We played Wake this year on Thanksgiving. However, there were exactly as many students at the VU-ut game as there were at the Thanksgiving weekend VU-wake game.
I was there, however, as always (one of the few).

Well, maybe we'll get Malzahn and then Vandy fans, including students, will start going to Vandy games.

Yeah, I guess it has been a while since UT decided that UK their bigger rival.

UCheat did not decide UK was their bigger rival. Vanderbilt decided several years ago to move the game because their students tended to go home for the extended Thanksgiving break. That being said, there were as many students this year at the ucheat game as the Thanksgiving wake forest game. (None). This is because of the lack of winning, just as much as it has been because of the decision to move these games. I was there at all of these season-ending games, as were the "core 2000" season ticket holders that don't care what the record is or the calendar holds...
The last coaching staffs, Johnson and Caldwell, failed to acknowledge the fan base and its suffering. I hope whatever we end up with gets the clue. Coaches and players HAVE TO suffer for no more than five years in the role they choose. Fans and alumni are around for the long haul.

This is likely a scenario where the lawyers are working on details in the contract. I would also not be surprised if Malzahn is getting a counter offer and some (financial) pressure to stay from the Auburn administration / Boosters. I doubt however that Auburn will want to put that kind of money (2MM -3MM)on the table to keep him; and from a business standpoint it is doubful that Malzahn will be this heavily sought-after next season when openings will again be available around the country. My bet is that he has agreed in principle but is having the lawyers work out specific contract language. The players better be ready to really step up thier efforts to win as there will be no excuses with both Malzahn and likely Herb Hand as OC. I would expect resolution to contract details and confirmation by mid day Monday.

Yes, he's working out the details of the contract and meanwhile everybody's telling him he's crazy to take the Vandy job because nobody can win there. I believe he can win at Vandy, and I hope he takes our offer.

Dimon, I would really be shocked if Malzahn did not take the job at this point. I have a son on the team and they are all excited about the prospect of playing for Malzahn and the new staff. I love Vandy (so does my son) and I think that serious football people are not nearly as down on the future of Vandy football as some of the naysayers would have you think. My guess is that if he accepts the job and looking ahead at next seasons schedule, he can have a winning season in his 1st year. Dont forget that most expected this to be a tough year but we had a strong freshman class and will have some very solid redshirts ready to compete for the incoming season. Securing Herb Hand as OC would really be good as he clearly is a good evaluator of talent on the offensive side of the ball. Malzahn would then get to bring in a full recruiting class the following season; Vandy could become good rather quickly and perhaps reach it's full potential. I hope we get this done today. Go Dores !

Great comments. Thanks much. Yes, I think the right person without a doubt can win at Vanderbilt. We've just got to be able to score some points. I've said all along that we've had two solid recruiting classes and should be much improved in 2011 and 2012. And Malzahn should be able to steal some recruits (namely Kiehl Frazier) by February.
