Vandy lost... We laughed, we cried

I'm in Nashville, where I saw Vandy lose 23-21 to Northwestern. The game was at once satisfying and unnerving. Satisfying because Vandy amassed more than 400 yards, scored three touchdowns, and found a big-time talent in WR Johnathan Krause. Unnerving because Larry made a couple of errors, John Cole struggled and the game essentially ended with a crap flagrant foul call against Jay Fullam, which was made in front of the NW coaching staff.

Typing this on my iPod keypad so I'll end here and break it down later. Overall, the performance was encouraging. Wait till Ryan Seymour returns and replaces Welchans, who struggled. Wait till we take the wraps off the frosh WRs.

Chris Marve is a freaking beast and we are fortunate to have him. More later. Let's hold our heads high.

Well put. Looking forward to another fall of Moral Victory! (but hoping for a few actual victories)

Good post. I attended the game and felt like this is the type of game that vandy has got to figure out a way to win in order to reach 5-7 wins. Way to many penalties which only made tha last bad call by the officials even matter. Vandy certainly did enough to win. Really impressed with Krause; a little disapointed that we could not get the ball to Mathews when he was in the game at wr. Much better football by Vandy after they made adjustments to NW 1st qtr dominance and being down 10-0. I was in the stands and it appeared that the fans were very supportive...too many mental mistakes causing penalties. The O line played much better in the 2nd half. I still feel like Larry smith needs to play better and get the ball downfield. The running game was strong....at some point the coachjing staff will need o turn loose the freshman wr's into the game plan. Krause was very impressive. Mathews was on special teams but did not have any balls thrown his way. Not sure why Boyd is not playing. We missed an opportunity to steal the 1st game. Go Dores.

Good analysis. Yes, we need to take the wraps off the freshmen receivers. If our receiving corps was so bad last year, why did we stick with last year's lineup (Cole, Umoh, Wimberly) for the majority of the game? I'll have more later tonight or tomorrow.

Your pre-game analysis seems prescient now, after the game. I was really hoping we'd pull out the win, but I think there were lots of positive things to take away from this game, and we are definitely improved from last year. Penalties and stupid mistakes killed us.

Keep up the good analysis!

Beautiful evening, awesome tailgating, and a super "Star Walk"....one of best crowds at SW and game. I think we are very close to something....NW is going to be a strong team in B10+2!! O-line was not exceptionally stong, but most in sync in years. 6 true freshman burned shirts on KO team....interesting. One question....where is Vince Taylor....he was very impressive in fall drills, but still might not crack rotation at D-tackle?

Yes, I also noticed that VT didn't even dress and that Carey, Lassing, Simmons, Butler, Hal, Garnham, Clarke and Ladler all played on special teams as true frosh.
